What does it mean for me to be a woman?

For me, being a woman means pain.

Again and again, pain.

It means being treated unfairly, dehumanized, overlooked, or harassed. It means suffering – and often expecting that suffering will come. It means constantly having to fight, always being ready to flee, and staying vigilant. It means never feeling completely safe.

Yet, being a woman also means life.

To give life and to carry life within oneself.

I believe nothing is as close to the supernatural as womanhood. It means carrying a knowledge within oneself that cannot always be explained. It means being intuitive, being connected – with oneself and with other women. It means sisterhood, community, and the support of a circle of like-minded individuals.

It means living in cycles. Being close to the moon. Discovering nature again and again within one's own body and feeling its power.

I love being a woman.

And sometimes I hate it too.

But perhaps only because I love it so much.
