Open Call for Artists

Our rotating exhibition offers an ongoing opportunity to showcase selected works from our artist portfolio at Galerie Newman. Each month, we exhibit works by over 50 artists.

The works are regularly exchanged, allowing different artists and artistic positions to be shown throughout the year – creating recurring opportunities for visibility and sales.

We guarantee visibility—not sales. Purchasing decisions are made by our collectors and visitors, not by us. What we promise: that your work will be seen.

Selected artists and projects will be featured on our website (Artist of the Month), social media (posts/stories), in our newsletter, in the press, and via other communication channels.

We create opportunities to connect and exchange ideas with other artists, collectors, curators, and cultural professionals at artist events, meetups, and other community formats.

Community members receive the exclusive opportunity to learn about and participate in relevant calls for tenders, exhibition opportunities, awards, collaborations, and other gallery opportunities in advance and before their official announcement.

Our Artist Liaison is available as a personal point of contact throughout the collaboration and supports artists in gaining access to relevant opportunities, information, and resources.

Queer perspectives remain a central part of Galerie Newman's program, but our curatorial focus is broader.

We also work with artists whose practice explores themes such as body, desire, intimacy, femininity, masculinity, visibility, and contemporary feminist perspectives.

No. We collaborate with artists from various countries and regions and are open to international collaborations.

No. Submitting your portfolio and applying to Newman Gallery are completely free of charge.

Following a successful selection, you will receive the Artist Representation Agreement as well as further information on the collaboration directly from our Artist Liaison.

You will have the opportunity to review the agreement at your leisure before deciding to collaborate.

If you decide to collaborate with Gallery Newman, you will sign the agreement and pay the one-time onboarding fee.

Yes. After a positive selection, a one-time onboarding fee of €215 net / €255.85 gross is charged.

There are no fees for submitting a portfolio or applying to Newman Gallery.

The onboarding fee covers the administrative and organizational effort associated with establishing cooperation with Newman Gallery. This includes the creation and maintenance of your artist portfolio, the processing of artwork and artist information, as well as the digital and organizational infrastructure we provide to support our artists.

Furthermore, the fee contributes to the financing of our solidarity model, through which we can offer a reduced onboarding fee to selected artists from economically disadvantaged countries, crisis regions, and other financially challenging life situations.

We believe that a person's financial means or the economic situation of the country in which an artist lives should not be an obstacle to joining our artist community.

For this reason, Gallery Newman offers a solidarity model to selected artists from economically disadvantaged countries, crisis regions, and other financially challenging life situations.

Artists who meet the relevant criteria can become part of the Newman Artist Portfolio with a reduced onboarding fee.

The solidarity model is made possible, among other things, by the regular onboarding fees paid by other artists.

If you believe the solidarity model may be an option for you, you can discuss this individually with our Artist Liaison.

Applications and portfolio reviews remain completely free of charge for all artists.

Once we have received the signed agreement and the onboarding fee, we will send you a personal link to our onboarding form.

There, you can provide all relevant information about yourself and your artistic practice, as well as upload your artworks and the corresponding work details. Based on this information, we will create your personal Newman Artist Profile.

Artists can include up to 20 artworks in their portfolio at Newman Gallery.

The selected works and all relevant information will be documented during the onboarding process.

No. The collaboration with Newman Gallery is not exclusive.

Artists can continue to exhibit and sell their works independently or through other galleries.

The specific terms of the collaboration are laid out in the Artist Representation Agreement.

For artworks sold through Newman Gallery, the gallery will receive 50% of the net sale proceeds.

For the legally binding terms and details regarding sales and commissions, please refer to the Artist Representation Agreement.

The shipping costs for the first delivery of artworks to the Newman Gallery shall be borne by the artist.

For all subsequent deliveries requested by the Newman Gallery, the gallery will cover the shipping costs.

The artist is responsible for ensuring that the artworks are packaged securely and suitably for shipping.

No. Inclusion in the Newman Artist Portfolio does not automatically guarantee participation in a specific exhibition, Rotating Hanging, or any other project.

The respective opportunities depend on our program, available projects, curatorial considerations, and individual artistic practice.

Open Calls offer you the opportunity to apply for our upcoming exhibitions. These calls are exclusively for members of our community – provided that the onboarding process has been successfully completed and their works are presented online with us.

In addition, we provide information about external exhibition and project opportunities. This includes, for example, the exclusive book project "my gay eye" by Rinaldo Hopf, to which we provide our artists with preferred access.

With the "Artist of the Month" title, Galerie Newman shines a spotlight on a special artistic position each month. The award includes prominent placement on our homepage, the presentation of works directly in the gallery, and accompanying promotional measures via our newsletter and social media channels.

The artists are carefully selected by the curatorial team at Galerie Newman.

All our artists receive free access to projects such as the Folsom Award – without any participation fees. Furthermore, community members always benefit from priority access to other projects.

All members of our community are warmly welcome at our events at Galerie Newman Berlin. There are various ways to actively participate and get involved. Access is always free of charge, unless it is a clearly defined special event in advance.

Currently, as a gallery, we do not participate in any fairs. Should this change, the principle will also apply that we select and approach participants directly from our community.

In the future, we plan to host pop-up events. Our concept involves renting suitable locations for temporary use over short periods. All community members will have the opportunity to participate and will be informed in good time through open calls. The aim of this initiative is to expand beyond our usual spatial boundaries, create more space, and present a wider range of art.

The Rotating Hanging is an ongoing presentation format at Galerie Newman.

Selected works from our artist portfolio are regularly reassembled and presented in the gallery. This creates recurring opportunities for visibility and sales.

Yes. As part of its artist support program, Galerie Newman offers opportunities for mentoring and professional development.

Depending on the specific program and the individual needs of the artists, this may include artistic positioning, portfolio development, communication and presentation, career planning, and professional development.

A written agreement is made for each artwork. This regulates shipping, insurance, and the exact modalities for returning the works after an exhibition.

If your artwork is not yet with us on-site but is only listed online and a sale occurs, we will coordinate with you immediately to organize transport to the gallery. Once the work has arrived, it will be inspected and then forwarded to the buyer. You will only be responsible for the shipping costs for delivery to our gallery.

For every artwork that is exhibited in our gallery or arrives at our premises, we create a delivery note. This document legally records all relevant details – including the sales price, the shares for the artist and framing, and arrangements for covering shipping costs.

The Artist Bio serves as a personal introduction to the artists and is written by the artists themselves. We provide guidance and require that the texts be written in the third person.

Yes, the onboarding fee can be conveniently paid in installments via payment providers such as PayPal.

As soon as a work of art has been sold via our online shop or gallery, we will inform you immediately with all relevant information - including the selling price, taxes, and your share, which you will then invoice us for.

Please note that we cannot mark works in the Shopify shop as "Reserved". A work marked as "Sold out" is therefore not necessarily sold, but may merely be temporarily reserved.

If your artwork is not yet on-site with us, but is only listed online, we will coordinate with you immediately to arrange transport to the gallery. As soon as the work has arrived, it will be checked and then forwarded to the buyer. You will only be responsible for the shipping costs for delivery to our gallery.

As is customary in gallery operations, artworks are accepted on commission. Payment is made once the customer has definitively purchased and paid for the work. Our exhibitions usually last four to six weeks. This means that unsold artworks typically remain with us for up to 12 weeks and are then returned to you – unless a different agreement has been made.

Our collaboration is based on trust and transparency and is designed for a long-term partnership. Nevertheless, you remain completely flexible: You can easily end or cancel the cooperation at any time and without giving reasons.
