With Mother Period, which can also be read as Other Period, Anna Clarks explores the ambivalence of menstruating bodies. The figure represents power, pain, cleansing and cyclical renewal, but also societal attributions and condemnations imposed on menstruating bodies. As a lesbian woman without the desire for children, she experiences menstruation both as a physical reality and as a recurring reminder of reproductive potential that is not necessary for her own life. The painting negotiates this dichotomy between self-empowerment and external attribution, between bodily knowledge and societal expectation.
