Collection: Peter Humann

Peter Humann, born in 1963, is a self-taught artist from Cologne. He partially funded his studies (psychology, German, history, and Spanish) through pavement art – a good school, as he says today. He trained as a chef and still works in this profession. Together with photographer Klaus Wohlmann, he published two cookbooks. His works have been shown in both solo and group exhibitions.
The central theme of his work as a gay artist – predominantly painting and graphics – is men, whether as innocent portraits or in explicit depictions of sexual scenes. He sees himself as a representative of abstract realism, with his works ranging from abstraction to realistic representation. Dissolving forms are a recurring stylistic element in his work.
"Even if I decide beforehand what style I want to paint a picture in, it develops a life of its own as soon as I start painting. The motif determines how it wants to be painted, not me," he says about his art. He lives and works with his husband and dog in Cologne.
