Collection: Brenda R. Fernández

Brenda R. Fernández is a Mexican-Spanish visual artist and researcher based in Mexico City. In her artistic practice, she explores the relationships between memory, experience, materiality, and human relationships. Her artistic career spans more than three decades. Starting with painting, she has gradually expanded her practice to sculpture, textiles, spatial structures, and installations. Her work explores how experiences take shape in matter and how materials preserve traces of time, use, relationships, and memory.

Alongside her artistic work, Fernández has more than 25 years of professional experience in social development, community work, education, and social and financial inclusion. She has led interdisciplinary projects and collaborated with public institutions, non-governmental organizations, universities, civil society organizations, and multidisciplinary teams throughout Mexico. Her long-standing engagement with communities, territories, and institutions shapes her methods of observation and research, as well as her artistic translation of collective experiences into material processes.

Fernández studied art at the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana in Mexico City and furthered her artistic training under the Mexican master Luis Nishizawa. In addition, she earned a master's degree in Social Responsibility from the Universidad Anáhuac. The combination of her artistic and social science-oriented education forms a distinctive foundation for her practice, in which observation, relationships, collective experience, and material transformation are interconnected.

Her work has been presented in museums, institutional exhibition spaces, galleries, and international art fairs in Europe, the United States, Latin America, and Asia. Her selected institutional presentations include *Brain Cake* in the Gaudí Room at La Pedrera in Barcelona, *Il Canto delle Sirene* at the Museo Luigi Bellini in Florence, *Beyond Borders* at the Museum Europeu d’Art Modern (MEAM) in Barcelona, the *Biennale of Women in Art* at the Chelsea Old Town Hall in London, *Le Muse Incantatrici* at the Museo del Mar in Santa Pola, and *Onde e Stelle – Viaggio Senza Confini tra Mare e Universo* at the Museo Navale di Imperia in Italy. She also participated in a group exhibition at the MAMAG Modern Art Museum in Vienna.

Her ongoing research project, *The Persistence of Matter*, explores how relationships take shape, become experiences, and endure through matter. Starting with painting, the research expands to natural pigments, sedimentation processes, textiles, structures, suspended bodies, installations, and spatial experiences. Through this expanded material language, Fernández explores matter as a carrier of relationships, experience, memory, and transformation.
