"we bleed silently, our pain is unheard, made invisible."
In creating my sculpture, I realized that the menstrual cycle never stands still and I would like that to be reflected in my art as well. During the creative process, the glue that fixed the spikes in the torso came loose and they fell off. What surprised me at first has now become an integral part of the process.
Because it symbolizes a loss of control. Exactly the same feeling one experiences when, seemingly out of nowhere, one feels a pulling or pain in the lower abdomen; pain emanating from an organ that is still neither truly understood nor sufficiently researched today.
The loss of control experienced by all those affected by the gender pain gap is thus expressed.
For the gender pain gap describes the systemic disadvantage of women* and marginalized bodies in the medical system. There is a lack of information and safety, which should actually be part of our lives.
The sculpture serves as an independent reminder that this problem exists.
