On display is a photograph of a dervish dancer (Anouk Haueter) dancing in a skirt soaked in menstrual blood. The image is an excerpt from a performance by Anouk Haueter in the forest. In front of a mirrored bowl stands the dancer (and 1 or 2 women to the left and right), topless, clothed only in a long white skirt. She pours (they pour) her menstrual blood into the mirrored bowl. The dancer kneels into the bowl. The skirt begins to soak up the blood. She sits down in her spilled blood. The white skirt becomes saturated. Afterwards, the dervish dancer spins (between the other women). The performance represents the shedding of blood that every menstruating person experiences approximately once a month. Associated with this is a loss of energy, a process of letting go, but also a rising from it. It is a peaceful shedding of blood in contrast to the warlike shedding of blood. Our work aims to invite us to perceive how we are all intertwined in this cycle.
