Thomas Kunkel is a contemporary abstract artist born in Frankfurt am Main in 1965. Today, he lives and works in the Swabian Jura. Painting has been a part of his life for around four decades—initially alongside his professional career, and with increasing intensity and public presence in recent years. His current work focuses on change, transience, and the traces left by time. His pieces are created through a multilayered process using pigments, mineral and organic materials, and self-prepared painting surfaces. Structure, layering, cracks, and accidental changes are deliberately incorporated into the images. Kunkel increasingly works with natural and recycled materials and incorporates older supports into new works. His abstract painting moves between reduction and visible materiality, leaving room for a variety of personal perceptions.
