Andrew Putschoegl, best known for his “Together, Apart” photo series created at the start of the pandemic in 2020—an ambitious project for which he photographed more than 530 people across Southern California—captures the rawness and tenderness of his subjects. With a generous and benevolent eye, he not only reveals the personalities of his subjects, but also their vulnerability and fragility—and in the best possible way. He creates an unusual intimacy in which the viewer and subject(s) are inextricably linked in a quiet, contemplative moment.

Silver & Gelatin is the photographic alter ego of filmmaker Andrew Putschoegl. Born and raised in the heart of the United States, he moved to Los Angeles as a teenager to pursue a career in film and television. After finding success as a director, producer, and editor, he picked up a camera in his early twenties and began telling stories with still images. He then dedicated himself to this process more seriously, focusing on travel and landscape photography. In contrast to filmmaking, where the collaborative process is at the forefront, photography offered creative freedom and the joy of working alone.

Andrew’s work deals with themes of sexuality and masculinity. As often as possible, he begins by sharing coffee or a meal with the subject. For Andrew, it is important that there is common ground between them, away from the camera. This way, the shoot is more relaxed and enjoyable. What the viewer sees in every photo is connection—the result of a warm and benevolent gaze, something Andrew deeply values. And when a subject is willing to try a pose or action that seems insignificant or trivial in the moment, but later turns out to be something magical, Andrew feels he has captured the heart of his subject—precisely what makes every viewer fall a little in love.

Andrew currently lives in Berlin with his husband and their two cats.
