Collection: Nicholas Nyland

Nicholas Nyland (American, b. 1976) has been living and working in Paris, France since 2021. After studying art at the University of Philadelphia, he developed an artistic practice rooted in contemporary abstraction, exhibiting notably in Seattle in this context. His arrival in Paris, where he pursued studies in fashion design at Parsons Paris, marked a turning point in his painting towards figuration, focusing on the male nude. His iconography draws on research in vintage magazines, archival photographs, and art history. These sources form the basis for a portrayal of queer desire, characterized by tenderness and sensuality, and in dialogue with contemporary painting. He often works on paper with light techniques such as ink and watercolors, which allow him creative freedom and a sense of immediacy, requiring a dedication to a medium that resists control.
