Collection: Magistermagus

I am a freelance artist and lecturer in fine arts from South Africa. My artistic practice consciously transcends the boundaries of traditional genres, combining oil painting with mixed-media drawings.

My works are created from the combination of art historical references with personal photographs, magazines, internet sources, film stills, academic art, commercial imagery, illustration, street art, and other visual archives. Through the appropriation and reordering of these visual sources, complex works emerge that challenge established viewing habits.

At the core of my artistic research is the aesthetic interaction between the artwork and the viewer. Based on a dialogical understanding of perception, I investigate how meaning and truth unfold in the shared process of interpretation. The artwork is not understood as an autonomous object, but as an open field of encounter where different horizons of experience intersect.

As a counter-proposal to concepts of modern and postmodern autonomy in fine arts, I understand the relationship between the work and the viewer as the starting point of artistic insight. Active aesthetic participation opens up possibilities to reveal hidden connections, critically question existing notions of truth, and develop new perspectives. It is precisely the productive engagement with ambiguity and incomplete information that enables the emergence of unexpected insights.

This approach extends beyond fine arts and is also relevant for visual communication in the broader social context. Aesthetic participation creates spaces for critical reflection on ideology and opens up diverse, sometimes contradictory perspectives on reality. On this basis, a deeper self-understanding can emerge, developed from a moral understanding of the perspectives of others.
