This painting addresses endometriosis, an often hidden, chronic condition that predominantly affects women. The visionary tentacles of wool intertwine with the canvas, symbolizing the multifaceted, persistent pain that lurks invisibly in daily life. The expansive, organic lines represent the struggles that affected individuals experience within their bodies and in the healthcare system: hesitation, misunderstandings, diagnostic delays, but also resilience and self-empowerment.
From a feminist perspective, endometriosis is not viewed as an isolated individual problem, but as a societal phenomenon that points to a lack of recognition, gender-specific health disparities, and patriarchal structures. The mixture of oil (concrete, visible reality) and wool (soft, vulnerable surface) alludes to how pain and silence are intertwined – made visible through art, yet often taboo.
The work challenges the viewer to take the voices of those affected seriously, to critically question medical hurdles, and to see endometriosis as part of a larger feminist health debate: We need better education, more research, better care – and more compassion.
