This work does not show an idealised body.

It shows a body in a state of emergency – painful, exposed and beyond control.

The red and violet areas stand for what society would rather keep invisible: blood, cramps, pain and exhaustion. They are not confined to a single place but run through the whole body – the abdomen, the swollen breast and the thighs. Pain is not shown here in isolation, but as a whole-body experience.

In her hand the figure holds an opened blister pack of paracetamol. Some tablets are missing, others are still there. It stands for the attempt to control pain – and for the experience that this attempt is often not enough.

A tampon is deliberately shown in plain sight. Not as a hidden aid, but as a self-evident part of the body and of a reality that is all too often made invisible.

Society tends to accept the female body only when it is quiet, when it functions and when it leaves no traces.

This work refuses that expectation.

It shows a body that does not stay silent.

Not in spite of the pain – but with it.
