“Imagine if men were as disgusted with rape as they are with period.” – written as a quote on a pad, Denise's work was inspired by this sentence. Because yes, menstruation is often associated with disgust or shame... what the fuck!!
As a menstruating person, the artist experienced shame as a fixed part of her life. Shame for menstruation. Shame for the blood. Shame for the sticky mass flowing out of the body. Shame so strong that Denise herself wanted nothing to do with this mass... Her period was like a fragment of herself that she had locked away with other fragments.
But that's over now – DOWN WITH SHAME!
No more secretly pulling period products out of a bag and making them disappear into a pocket. No! Tampons are juggled on the way to the toilet. Periods are talked about loudly. Period products become works of art... And with this, the artist pursues one goal – to free periods from disgust and shame.
So if someone takes a pantyliner, please hang it up, stick it somewhere, and show the world that we are not ashamed.
